GREAT is the LORD, and highly to be praised * in the city of our God, even upon his holy hill.
The hill of Sion is a fair place, and the joy of the whole earth; * upon the north side lieth the city of the
great King: God is well known in her palaces as a sure refuge.
For lo, the kings of the earth * were gathered, and gone by together.
They marvelled to see such things; * they were astonished, and suddenly cast down.
Fear came there upon them; and sorrow, * as upon a woman in her travail.
Thou dost break the ships of the sea * through the east-wind.
Like as we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the LORD of hosts, in the city of our God; * God
upholdeth the same for ever.
We wait for thy loving-kindness, O God, * in the midst of thy temple.
O God, according to thy Name, so is thy praise unto the world's end; * thy right hand is full of
righteousness.
Let the mount Sion rejoice, and the daughters of Judah be glad, * because of thy judgments.

For wickedness burneth as the fire: it shall devour the briers and thorns, and shall kindle in the

of hosts is the land darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire: no man shall spare his brother.
And he shall snatch on the right hand, and be hungry; and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not
be satisfied: they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm: Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim,
Manasseh: and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand
is stretched out still. Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write grievousness which
they have prescribed; To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of
my people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless! And what will ye do in
the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from far? to whom will ye flee for help? and
where will ye leave your glory? Without me they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall fall

BLESSED be the Lord God of Israel; * for he hath visited and
redeemed his people;
And hath raised up a mighty salvation for us, * in the
house of his servant David;

The Collect for the Day
The Second Sunday in Advent
BLESSED Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures
to be written for our learning; Grant that we may
in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly
digest them, that by patience and comfort of thy holy
Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast, the blessed
hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our
Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
The First Sunday in Advent

ALMIGHTY God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the
armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great
humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the quick
and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal, through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the
Holy Ghost, now and ever. Amen.

O GOD, who art the author of peace and lover of concord,
in knowledge of whom standeth our eternal life, whose service
is perfect freedom; Defend us thy humble servants in all assaults
of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in thy defence, may not

Almighty and everlasting God, from whom cometh every good and perfect
gift; Send down upon our Bishops, and other Clergy, and upon the
Congregations committed to their charge, the healthful Spirit of thy
grace; and, that they may truly please thee, pour upon them the continual
dew of thy blessing. Grant this, O Lord, for the honour of our Advocate
and Mediator, Jesus Christ. Amen.

O God, the Creator and Preserver of all mankind, we humbly beseech thee
for all sorts and conditions of men; that thou wouldest be pleased to
make thy ways known unto them, thy saving health unto all nations. More
especially we pray for thy holy Church universal; that it may be so
guided and governed by thy good Spirit, that all who profess and call
themselves Christians may be led into the way of truth, and hold the
faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of
life. Finally, we commend to thy fatherly goodness all those who are any
ways afflicted, or distressed, in mind, body, or estate; [* especially

comfort and relieve them, according to their several necessities; giving
